How to find the weight of a camper

What does that camper weigh? How do I know if my car, truck or SUV can tow it?

What do all these numbers on the camper mean? Everyone has these questions or similar when they first start thinking about buy a trailer or camper. Those that buy boats also ask these questions as well. Not only that but anyone towing anything with significant weight for the first time will want to get these answers as well.

So, enough about all of that let's just get right to it. Where can you find the weight of a camper and how do you know if you can tow it, well there are three magic numbers to check.

  1. Tow Capacity
  2. Unloaded Weight
  3. Gross Weight
Those three numbers make up the basis of what you will need to know before you tow.

If you look on the door of any RV or camper you will see a sticker on the hinge side of the door that tells the key weights to know. Unloaded Vehicle Weight or Dry Weight, Payload Capacity or Carry Capacity are quickly identifiable in either a white or yellow sticker.

When you go to your driver or towing vehicle, open up the driver side door and you will also see a couple of stickers. One of them will have your vehicle manufacturers recommend tire pressures and the other will have the GVWR or Gross vehicle weight rating, Curb or Unloaded Weight, and Tow Capacity listed on it. Some may even have a tongue or hitch weight. The Gross Vehicle wight rating is the weight rating of your that car or truck plus fully loaded fuel and cargo that it can safely hold.
